Jan 4, 2018 - Hey everyone, my apologies on the month and a bit of a hiatus. I hope everyone has had an amazing holiday season and a wonderful introduction to 2018.
2017 was pretty wild; business-wise and personally a roller-coaster. High points include becoming part of the Blueprint photographer roster, getting 92 shows under my belt (eight more than last year!) and doing my first few interviews for the Permanent Rain Press (Marcus Bridge of Northlane and Alissa White-Gluz of Arch Enemy). Shittier points include having $2500 worth of gear stolen, some emotional hardships and not being able to photograph the bae, Lorde, at Bumbershoot.
Alas, much like every year, we wish ourselves only for a better year but in actuality - it's more or less going to be the same as every other year. Some highs, some lows. Such is the way of life. However; I do think goal-setting is important and I hope to make some more relationships in the music industry this year (ayyyyy festivals!), delve into photographic education, work on my post-production/conceptual work and do some more travelling (Taiwan, Tokyo, Iceland, SE Asia, I'm looking at you). I would love to hear what you readers are hoping to aspire for in 2018. Leave a comment down below.
But this wouldn't be a complete blog post without some photos, so I'll throw some of my favourite captures from this year below:
Antoinette Libelt - Local Musician
Little Miss Christie
Juli
Kat Tiare
First bodyscape!
Festival Fashion - Flavio Periera & Brittany Oake
Davey Havok - AFI
Mother Mother
Banks
Tom Petty, Rest in Peace you legend.
Alissa White-Gluz - Arch Enemy
Good Charlotte - With a quick feature in Alternative Press!
Obey the Brave
Stick To Your Guns at Vans Warped Tour. Still my favourite band live, to this date - so stoked for the upcoming Architects & Counterparts tour!
Being As An Ocean, definitely top tier live. 11/10 would recommend.
Our Last Night
Flume @ Bumbershoot
Controversial to all the local crew around here for the video screen, but Vince Staples was probably one of the most surprising artists for me to get into this year. His style of rap is definitely refreshing for the scene. Here he is at Bumbershoot.
Lil Boat!
July Talk definitely surprised me being one of my hidden gems for the year. Such a cool dynamic between the two lyricists and one of my few b/w sets due to a request by them to keep in line with their aesthetic. Also...my first show (either shooting or attending) at the Malkin Bowl which was pretty lit!
Not necessarily the sharpest image but the Menzingers definitely stole a spot in my heart with their latest release, After the Party, which I'd recommend for anyone across all genres. It's fairly easy-listening in terms of punk rock but the lyrics resonate so clearly with the human experience.
The homie, Hoodie Allen.
Periphery was pretty fucking nasty live. Although not my usual style image, I thought this particular moment of levitation was sweet, so here it is on the list.
First time playing with prisms (shout out to Lucas Holt and Brandon Klemets) which made some cool effects (I think) during Animals As Leaders.
Despite missing them at Bumbershoot, I got the chance to shoot Odesza again as an official member of the Blueprint photographer roster and got one of my favourite images I think ever. So that's pretty fucking sweet.
Fuck the alt-right. Anti-Flag was one of my favourite bands growing up (thanks Dakota!) which ultimately helped throw me into the punk scene. Always entertaining live.
OneRepublic. Sure it's soundboard but I still think this turned out okie!
Mother. Fucking. Starboy. 'Nuff said.
I think San Francisco is definitely my home away from home. Sure I haven't explored much of the globe (hoping to change that) but there's something about the Bay Area that feels like a better version of Vancouver. Where's your home away from home?
Haven't shot much street, hoping to change that with SE Asia and potentially Tokyo this year. Do you guys prefer it in B/W or in colour?
I won't post too much Hawaii here and will save it for the upcoming blog post (sorry, I've been hella busy and lazy from all the food and family time, I hope you can forgive me.) Despite hating the sun and not being able to swim, I had a really splendid time exploring the island and meeting the homies IRL (Shout out to you guys, Pat, Erin, Dan, Shannon, Moku and Chesca!)
